Plastic Sheeting

Clear and Black Poly Film for Construction

Building Materials  ·  Updated 2026

Building Materials

Plastic sheeting, also called poly film, is flexible polyethylene you use to cover materials, protect surfaces from paint and contain renovation dust. Buy the width that covers your work and the type that handles the exposure, and you keep the mess off the things you want to save. Temporary protection and a permanent moisture barrier are different buying decisions, even when both start with a roll of plastic.

Poly-Cover plastic sheeting for covering and containment

Warp Bros. Poly-Cover plastic sheeting serves construction and agricultural covering jobs. You can use this material category for temporary dust walls, room isolation, furniture covers and protection around painting or sanding. That range of jobs is the reason to buy poly: you can protect the furniture and separate the work area with the same kind of material.

Montana’s winter renovation season makes that especially useful. When you’re remodeling one room in an occupied house, containing the work matters as much as covering what’s inside it. Choose clear plastic sheeting where you want covered items to remain visible.

The Poly-Cover line spans thicknesses from 0.75 mil to 10 mil and widths from 12 inches to 50 feet. Those are line-wide ranges. Choose your roll by its actual thickness and dimensions; the word “heavy-duty” alone doesn’t settle the job.

Full-weight plastic sheeting has a concrete selling point here: Warp Bros. guarantees Poly-Cover’s full weight, full measure and thickness. That is worth buying because thickness and coverage are the very things you’re choosing the roll for.

Specialty antistatic and fire-retardant sheeting serves sensitive-equipment areas and jobs with fire-performance requirements; those features are separate purchasing requirements from ordinary covering film. LDPE sheeting means low-density polyethylene sheeting, a common material in this category.

Clear plastic sheeting in 4 mil

Warp Bros. Carry-Home clear sheeting is 4 mil thick, 3 feet wide and 50 feet long. Buy that narrow format for covering a long, narrow work surface or protecting individual items; you get length without wrestling with a room-wide sheet.

For broader coverage, Warp Bros. clear poly film comes in 4-mil sheets measuring 10 feet wide by 25 feet long and 20 feet wide by 25 feet long. Buy the 10-foot width for a smaller painting area or furniture grouping. Buy the 20-foot width for a broad area that would otherwise need adjoining sheets. The thickness is the same, so choose between them by the width you need to cover without gaps.

A clear plastic sheeting roll is useful when you need to see what you’ve covered. For painting and sanding, full coverage matters more than buying extra thickness and leaving an exposed strip along the edge. Keep walking routes off the plastic because it can be slippery, and fold used sheeting inward carefully so the paint it caught stays contained during cleanup.

Black plastic sheeting for temporary covers

Warp Bros. black poly film is 3 mil thick, 10 feet wide and 25 feet long. Buy it for temporary material covering where visibility through the cover isn’t part of the job. Choose the clear 4-mil film when seeing the covered items matters.

For landscaping plastic sheeting and black plastic sheeting for gardens, separate temporary covering from a growing-system decision. Poly serves temporary agricultural covering jobs, including protecting feed and equipment, and it can cover construction dirt piles. A garden material cover and a permanent weed-control layer are different purchases; choose the film for the actual task.

Montana’s building season runs from late April into early or mid October, putting material covers outdoors through changing weather. Protect the film from sharp edges and secure it for the exposure. Around Great Falls, winter winds of 15-plus mph and gusts of 30–40 mph make fastening a serious part of the job. Buy the cover with its attachment method in mind; extra thickness alone doesn’t solve wind load.

How thick should plastic sheeting be?

A mil is one thousandth of an inch. Six-mil plastic sheeting is 0.006 inches thick, or 0.1524 millimeters. It is a common choice for temporary protection, containment and general construction, but thicker plastic isn’t automatically the better material.

For the clear Warp Bros. choices above, all three are 4 mil. Moving from the 3-foot Carry-Home format to the 20-foot sheet buys width, not a heavier grade.

For heavy-duty plastic sheeting that will face repeated handling, abrasion or a containment pole system, reinforcement matters. Reinforced 6-mil sheeting usually outperforms standard non-reinforced poly under those conditions. That’s the useful distinction behind searches for fiber reinforced plastic sheeting: resistance to tearing and punctures, rather than thickness alone.

Is 6-mil plastic enough for a vapor barrier?

Six mil alone doesn’t settle a moisture-barrier purchase. Plastic sheeting resists water, but moisture protection also depends on sound seams and the installation method. Many under-slab and high-performance moisture-control jobs require thicker or engineered vapor barriers under the project’s specification and applicable code.

For plastic sheeting under concrete, buy the barrier required for that assembly. Keep the Warp Bros. 3-mil and 4-mil covering choices focused on temporary protection. Montana’s spring snowmelt can leave ground wet for weeks, so permanent ground-moisture control deserves its own material selection before the work gets covered up.

Greenhouse plastic, outdoor exposure and cold

For a greenhouse, choose covering made for greenhouse service and the expected sunlight exposure. Build the covering decision around the frame, fastening and outdoor duration. Prolonged UV exposure and sharp contact points shorten ordinary construction film’s life; UV-resistant materials address a different exposure need from a temporary painting cover.

Clear construction sheeting and greenhouse glazing also serve different purposes. Clear 6-mil construction film often has a light haze, so “clear” doesn’t necessarily mean a crystal-clear view.

White describes a color; opaque means you cannot see through the material. Neither word by itself establishes thickness, reinforcement or outdoor suitability. Choose those properties for the job before choosing color.

For keeping cold out during Montana’s fall close-in rush, treat plastic sheeting as temporary covering rather than insulation. Finish the enclosure and insulation for warmth, and use the poly for the covering and containment work it does well.

The Pick

Buy Warp Bros. 4-mil clear poly film in the 10-foot by 25-foot size for smaller painting and covering jobs, or the 20-foot by 25-foot size for broad coverage. Buy the 3-foot by 50-foot Carry-Home clear sheeting for long, narrow surfaces and individual covers. Buy Warp Bros. 3-mil black poly film in the 10-foot by 25-foot size for temporary material covers where you don’t need visibility. Choose by the job first, then buy enough width to cover it properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is plastic sheeting used for?

Plastic sheeting is flexible polyethylene used to cover materials, protect surfaces during painting and contain dust during renovation. You can use it for temporary room barriers or to cover furniture and equipment. Coverage matters: an exposed strip along the edge leaves part of the job unprotected, regardless of how thick the plastic is.

What mil plastic sheeting should you use for a vapor barrier?

Six mil isn’t a universal answer for a vapor barrier. Many under-slab and high-performance moisture-control applications call for thicker or engineered barriers, so your assembly’s requirements should drive the choice. Seams and installation matter too; extra thickness won’t close a gap in the barrier.

How thick is 6-mil plastic sheeting?

Six-mil plastic sheeting is 0.006 inches thick, or 0.1524 millimeters. It’s used for temporary protection, containment and general construction. If you’re choosing heavy-duty plastic for repeated handling, abrasion or a containment pole system, reinforced 6-mil sheeting usually outperforms ordinary non-reinforced poly, so thickness shouldn’t be your only yardstick.

Is clear plastic sheeting completely clear?

Clear plastic sheeting lets you see covered items, but construction-grade clear 6-mil film often has a light haze. It’s useful when you need to identify furniture, equipment or materials beneath a cover. For that job, visibility through the film matters more than a perfectly clear view.
