Building Materials

Pipe couplings join your pipe, hose clamps hold your hose on its fitting, straps support the run, and insulation limits heat transfer and condensation. Get the connection and size right, and you keep a hose from slipping or leaking while putting the repair where it belongs. Start with what you are joining, its outside diameter and whether it carries pressurized water or gravity drainage.

Hose clamps: choose the range around your hose

A hose clamp secures a hose to its fitting. A worm screw hose clamp uses a screw engaging slots in a metal band; turning the screw draws the band tighter around the hose. That adjustment makes it a good choice when you need to tighten or release a hose connection with a driver.

Measure the hose while it is on the fitting. Choose a clamp that puts that outside diameter near the middle of its adjustment range. The loose hose measurement can send you home with the wrong size.

Hose clamp size rangeMinimum diameterMaximum diameter
1/4 to 5/8 inch1/4 inch5/8 inch
5/16 to 7/8 inch5/16 inch7/8 inch
1/2 to 1-1/4 inches1/2 inch1-1/4 inches
5/16 to 5/8 inch5/16 inch5/8 inch
4-1/2 to 6-1/2 inches4-1/2 inches6-1/2 inches
4 to 6 inches4 inches6 inches
2-1/2 to 4-1/2 inches2-1/2 inches4-1/2 inches
2-1/2 to 3-1/2 inches2-1/2 inches3-1/2 inches

For a hose measuring 3 inches over its fitting, buy the 2-1/2- to 3-1/2-inch clamp. Your measurement sits right in the middle. Buying the largest clamp that will close around the hose gains you nothing on that connection.

Whether you are shopping for a metal hose clamp or a stainless-steel hose clamp, settle the fit first. For a washer drain hose clamp, use the diameter of the drain hose over its connector, not the washer’s water-supply connection size.

How to use a hose clamp

Slide the clamp onto the hose before pushing the hose onto the barbed fitting. Position the band over the fitting, keeping it clear of the ridge nearest the fitting’s tip. Tighten the screw clockwise with a screwdriver, nut driver or socket wrench until the clamp grips securely and makes the seal. Stop there. Overtightening can damage the hose.

The hose clamp tool follows the clamp design. A worm screw clamp takes a driver. A PEX pinch-clamp connection takes a clamp tool that compresses the raised ear, followed by a visual check of the closed ear. Choose the connection system before choosing the tool.

To release a screw-type radiator hose clamp, turn its screw counterclockwise until the band is loose enough to slide away from the fitting. That method belongs to a screw clamp; identify the closure before working on a crimp or spring clamp.

Vibration and thermal expansion can loosen hose clamps over time. In Montana, include accessible hose connections in your fall repair check before the rush to close in for freezing weather.

PVC pipe couplings: match the ends and the job

A pipe coupling joins two lengths of pipe. A straight PVC pipe coupling joins PVC in a straight run, while a reducing coupling joins different sizes. Socket-style PVC couplings use solvent-cement connections. Buy the straight coupling for a straight connection and the reducer for a size change.

For a 2-inch PVC pipe coupling or a 1-1/2-inch pipe coupling, the nominal size starts the selection. Pipe material and actual outside diameter finish it. Check both ends of an existing repair, especially where different materials meet. Two pipes called the same size can still require a transition connection.

When joining PVC pipe with a coupling, identify whether you are connecting plain pipe ends or repairing at an existing fitting socket. Flexible socket repair couplings can repair plastic joints without replacing the fitting. Keeping a sound fitting is worth doing when the repair can stay at the joint.

A rubber coupling for pipe joins pipe ends; split rubber pipe insulation wraps the pipe to limit heat transfer and condensation. Buy the coupling for the connection and insulation for the piping around it.

Flexible repair couplings: keep the repair at the joint

For equal-size connections, the flexible PVC repair coupling choices are 1-1/4 by 1-1/4, 1-1/2 by 1-1/2, 2 by 2, 3 by 3 and 4 by 4 inches. Match both ends to the pipe you are repairing. A 2-by-2-inch coupling is the starting choice for an equal-size 2-inch repair; a change in diameter calls for a reducer.

A flexible pipe coupling and a rigid socket coupling make different connections. Flexible repair designs can accommodate repair situations that call for something other than a straight solvent-weld socket. For a PVC pipe rubber coupling, match the actual pipe material, both outside diameters and the service before choosing the size. Flexibility does not make every coupling suitable for pressurized water.

During Montana’s winter interior renovation season, settle those details while the piping is exposed. A drain repair and a frozen water-supply repair can happen in the same house, but they call for parts matched to different service.

For size changes, choose a 4-to-3-inch, 2-to-1-1/2-inch or 1-1/2-to-1-1/4-inch flexible reducing coupling; for a clay-to-PVC connection, choose the 4-inch clay-to-4-inch PVC transition and match each end to its pipe’s outside diameter.

For a change in direction or a branch, choose the 2-inch flexible 90-degree PVC drain, waste and vent repair elbow or the 2-inch flexible PVC repair tee to match that connection.

Pipe insulation and insulating tape

Buy pipe insulation to limit heat transfer and control condensation around hot and cold piping. The straight sleeves come in 6-foot lengths, with size combinations of 1/2 by 1/2 inch, 1/2 by 3/4 inch and 1/2 by 1 inch. The self-sealing sleeve has a 1/2-by-1-1/4-inch size combination and the same 6-foot length. Match the sleeve opening to the pipe’s actual outside diameter.

Choose the self-sealing sleeve when you want a closure built into the sleeve. Pipe insulation tape comes in a 1/8-inch-by-2-inch-by-15-foot roll; choose the tape format where the job calls for a wrap instead of a straight sleeve.

In the Flathead Valley, winter lows average 16°F, and inversions hold cold on the valley floor from late October through February. Make insulation part of the fall work on exposed piping, along with addressing cold-air entry and heat reaching the space. That is a better repair plan than closing the wall after fixing the leak and leaving the cold exposure in place.

For no-hub soil-pipe connections, match the 1-1/2-, 3- or 4-inch coupling to the pipe material and outside diameter; standard cast-iron no-hub couplings serve hubless cast-iron drain, waste and vent connections and are a separate choice from flexible PVC repair couplings.

Pipe straps and hangers: support the run

Choose pipe straps and hanger tape by pipe size, mounting position and the support the run needs. Metal pipe straps hold pipe flush against the mounting surface. Perforated hanger tape can support a pipe running parallel to a wooden beam. That makes the mounting arrangement part of the purchase, right alongside pipe size.

For a vertical run at a floor penetration, a riser clamp transfers the pipe’s load to the floor around the opening and keeps the pipe from sliding down. Give the run its own support while it is open for repair. The coupling joins the pipe; the support carries the run.

The Pick

Buy the hose clamp whose range puts your fitted hose diameter near the middle. Buy an equal-size flexible PVC repair coupling for a matching repair connection, a reducer for a size change, and the clay-to-PVC transition where those materials meet. Choose the 2-inch elbow for the turn or the tee for the branch. Finish the job with straps or hangers matched to the run and fitted insulation sleeves around the piping.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you use a hose clamp?

Slide the hose clamp onto the hose before seating the hose on its barbed fitting. Position the band over the fitting, clear of the ridge nearest its tip, then turn the screw clockwise until the connection grips securely. The screw draws the slotted band tighter, so extra tightening after you’ve made the seal can damage the hose.

What is a pipe coupling?

A pipe coupling joins two pipe sections for an extension, a repair or a change in size. Use an equal-size connection where the ends match and a reducing connection where the sizes change. On a repair, match both pipe materials and outside diameters; the same nominal size doesn’t guarantee the same fit.

How do you join PVC pipe with a coupling?

A socket-style PVC pipe coupling uses solvent cement to join the pipe ends. Start with square, burr-free cuts and clean mating surfaces, and check the alignment before cementing. Let the joint cure fully before pressurizing it; a joint that holds together isn’t necessarily ready to carry pressure.

Can you remove a radiator hose clamp without special tools?

If your radiator hose clamp has a screw, you can release it with a matching screwdriver, nut driver or socket wrench instead of dedicated clamp pliers. Let the engine cool before working on the connection, then turn the screw counterclockwise until the band loosens enough to slide back along the hose, away from the fitting.
