Swiffer

Swiffer Sweeper, WetJet and Duster Swiffer

A Swiffer is the grab-it-and-go floor cleaner for dust, hair and sticky spills on hard floors, with no bucket to fill and nothing to rinse. The cloth or pad traps the dirt, and when you’re done it goes in the trash with the dirt still in it. It’s for anyone keeping hard floors and dusty shelves clean day to day.

Swiffer is an American cleaning brand made by Procter & Gamble. It launched in 1999, modeled on the Quickle Wiper, and built its name on handles and sweepers that take disposable cloths and pads. It has grown into a half-billion-dollar brand sold in more than fifteen countries.

Match the tool to the mess

Dry dust, hair and lint on a hard floor take a Sweeper with a dry cloth. Sticky spills and dried-on grime take a wet pad, either on the Sweeper or on a WetJet with its own solution. Dust above the floor, on fan blades, blinds and bookcases, takes a Duster. The rest of the family covers other jobs: the PowerMop is an all-in-one mopping system, the Sweeper XL is 1.5X wider for large areas, the Sweep + Vac is a lightweight vacuum, and the Swiffer Bissell Steamboost is a steam mop that uses its own steam pads.

Swiffer Sweeper: dry first, wet second

The Sweeper kit is a combination sweeper-mop, one handle for two kinds of cloth. The dry cloths have deep ridges and grooves that follow the floor and trap dirt, dust and hair. The wet cloths dissolve grime and trap it away. To load either one, lay the cloth flat, set the head in the middle, fold the edges up and push each corner into the gripper slots on top of the head.

The mistake seen most is going straight to wet on a floor covered in loose dust and hair. A wet pad rolls that into clumps and drags them across the room. Run a dry cloth first, then go wet on whatever is stuck down. The wet cloths are designed for quick cleanups in small spaces such as kitchens and bathrooms.

Cleaning a bright white floor

WetJet solution and the sealed bottle

The WetJet puts the mop, the bucket and the cleaning solution in one tool. Start with a fresh pad, pull the trigger and it sprays through two nozzles ahead of the head; the pad soaks up the spill and locks the liquid into its fibers. Center each pad under the head and press it flat onto the hook grippers. When pads start sliding off, pad fibers have packed into those grippers, and picking them clean with a stiff brush fixes it.

The bottle is sealed and can’t be opened, and the WetJet takes only WetJet-brand solution. There’s no refilling it: pull the empty out of the holder and snap a new one in, cap down. Pick the bottle by the floor. Multi-Surface covers sealed tile, laminate and similar floors, Wood Floor Cleaner is for finished hardwood, and the Vinyl, Tile & Laminate solution is formulated for luxury vinyl tile.

On hardwood, the worry is water. Swiffer makes a WetJet Wood Cleaning Pad engineered specifically for hardwood floors, and the Wood Floor Cleaner solution is made to run with it. Swiffer’s mopping pads with hundreds of gentle-glide strips are safe for hardwood, and the company is a member of the National Wood Flooring Association. The condition is the finish: this is for sealed, finished wood. Keep any wet mop off unfinished, oiled or waxed boards, and spray light so no water stands on a seam.

Swiffer Dusters

A Swiffer Duster is a disposable fiber head on a handle. Slide the handle’s two prongs into the sleeves on the duster until it seats, then fluff the fibers out by hand before the first pass. The 360° heads grab dust from every direction instead of pushing it off the edge, and the Heavy Duty version adds strips that break down dust that has built up in layers. One-sided Dusters are also made for flat surfaces.

Use it wherever dust sits: fan blades, blinds, bookcase tops, keyboard vents and a car’s interior. Shake it out over the trash between rooms. The head isn’t made to be washed; when it stops picking up, pull it off into the trash and slide on a refill. Tall ceiling fans and light fixtures need one of the extendable handles.

What it costs to keep running

The handle is the inexpensive part. Refills are the ongoing cost, since every pad and cloth is thrown away after one cleaning, and the WetJet runs only on its own bottles. Washable microfiber pads from other companies go through the washer after each use, but they aren’t Swiffer products. Used Swiffer refills can go to TerraCycle for recycling on a free shipping label from Swiffer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you use a Swiffer WetJet?

First pick up the loose dust and hair with a dry cloth, because a wet pad on a gritty floor only pushes the grit around. Then start in the far corner and work back toward the door, spraying a few feet ahead and pulling the mop through. The thick pad holds the dirt inside so it doesn’t smear, and the solution dries without a rinse, so swap to a fresh pad when the one you’re using turns gray and stops picking up.

Can you use a Swiffer on hardwood floors?

Yes, on sealed, finished hardwood. Use a dry cloth for the everyday pass, because grit ground in underfoot is what dulls and scratches a finish, and the microfiber-like pads are soft enough to be gentle on the wood. When it’s time to mop, the pre-mixed QuickDry wood floor cleaner dries fast and needs no rinse, so less water sits on the boards.

What’s the difference between Swiffer mopping pads?

The multi-surface mopping pads have 300+ scrubbing strips that reach into grooves and grout, which makes them the right pad for tile, where sticky spills settle into the joints. The Heavy Duty wet mopping cloths for the Sweeper have 75% more scrubbing power, and the WetJet Hardwood Floor Cleaner pads add an Absorb + Lock strip that holds dirt deep in the pad. Buy pads for the tool you own, since the Sweeper takes wet cloths and the WetJet takes its own spray mopping pads.

Can you wash a Swiffer Duster?

No. The head is disposable, and its fibers are specially coated to grab dust, so water or a trip through the washer leaves a limp head that pushes dust around instead of holding it. While you work, turn the head so all sides of the 360° fibers get used, and once in a while wipe the handle with a damp rag, because the handle is the part you keep.
