Steves & Sons doors are interior doors for the builder or homeowner fitting out a new house or replacing the doors in an old one. One family of doors covers every opening: molded panel, flush, Ultra HDF, solid wood panel, glass insert and bi-fold. The closets, the bedrooms and the office can all match.
Steves & Sons is a six-generation, family-owned door maker headquartered in San Antonio, Texas. It traces its heritage to the Ed Steves Lumber Company, founded in San Antonio in 1866. Today it’s known for high-volume interior doors and builds well over 10 million doors a year.
Where Steves doors are made
Steves builds its doors in the United States. San Antonio has both interior and exterior door plants, and interior doors also come out of plants in Richmond, Virginia, Lebanon, Tennessee and Brigham City, Utah. The company has also announced plans for a large-scale molded door skin plant in Athens, Georgia.
Molded panel and flush doors for most of the house
Molded panel is the everyday door. Pick smooth for a clean, modern painted face, or textured if you want wood grain showing through the paint. The textured 6-panel is the traditional look, and the Molded 3-Panel Shaker suits a newer, plainer house.
Flush doors are the economical choice, with a flat face, and the wood-species versions sit well with existing wood furniture and stained trim. In a house with painted trim, go molded panel. Where oak trim is already on the walls, hang an oak flush door.
Ultra HDF and solid wood panel where sound and feel matter
Most Steves doors are hollow core. Marshall Steves Sr. decided in 1955 to make only hollow core doors, and they’re still the core of the business. Hollow core is the right door for a closet, a linen closet or a hall opening, but it passes voices straight through. For the rooms where that matters, the line goes further. Steves wood panel doors are solid wood with true stile-and-rail construction, the way panel doors have always been built.
Ultra HDF doors sit between the two. They’re made to order in high-density fiberwood, they look and feel like stile-and-rail doors, and they’re built for better sound reduction. Put Ultra HDF on bedrooms, bathrooms and a home office, and choose solid wood panel where you want real wood in the door itself.
Glass insert and bi-fold doors
Glass insert doors use true divided-light designs and suit a home office, study or library. Use clear glass where you want the light and 1-Lite Obscured where you need privacy. Each lite comes masked individually, so leave the masking on until the paint or stain is done.
Bi-folds come in the same styles as the flush and molded panel doors, so order the closet doors in the same pattern as the hall doors beside them. Steves also makes exterior doors in fiberglass, steel and wood, including the direct-glazed Legacy doors, where the finish runs right up to the glass edge with no plastic rim.
Measure before you order
The mistake that costs the most is ordering a standard door for an old, out-of-size opening and planning to cut it down. On flush and molded panel doors, take no more than 1/2 inch off the total width or height, and split any cut like that: 1/4 inch off the top rail and 1/4 inch off the bottom rail. Those rails are the solid wood around the hollow core, and a cut past them leaves the edge with nothing to hold it. Cutting any other Steves door yourself voids the warranty.
When an opening is off by more than that half inch, special order a flush or molded panel door in the size it needs. After any trim, seal the cut edge with the same finish as the faces. Steves supplies touch-up paint or stain free on request for small areas, and it sells larger quantities of its finishes for bigger projects.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Steves & Sons doors any good?
Yes, as long as the door suits the room it’s going in. The doors are made with recycled material and built so they can last as long as the job they’re installed on, and the company publishes handling-and-care instructions for both its interior and exterior doors. Follow those from the day the doors arrive, because most trouble with a new door starts with how it was stored and handled before it was hung.
Can you get Steves & Sons exterior doors with glass and hardware already on them?
Yes, you can order them with decorative glass, hardware and premium exterior features already added. The exterior doors come with their own installation instructions and warranty document, so read it before the door goes into the opening. An exterior door only works as well as it’s set, shimmed and sealed.
