Ram Board

Ram Board Floor Protection, Stair Armor and Tapes Ram Board

Ram Board floor protection covers finished floors for contractors working through construction and remodeling. Its rolls and Pro Sheets combine spill protection with breathability for surfaces that are curing. Cover the route into the work area along with the room itself. Boots and debris travel farther than the work does.

Ram Board began in 1999 with floor protection originally designed for movie sets. It expanded into construction and is known for temporary floor protection, protective sheets, stair protection and tapes. Ram Board joined Surface Shields, Trimaco and Antinox to form Icon Protection.

Choose rolls or Pro Sheets by the layout

Use rolls for a continuous run down a hall and Pro Sheets where laying out separate panels suits the room. Pro Sheets measure 48 by 96 inches and lay flat for joining at the seams. Choose by the layout you’re covering and the pieces you’ll have to cut around doorways and corners.

Both formats use Spill Guard for protection against water, paint and mud, along with Vapor-Cure to let finished surfaces breathe during curing. That combination suits remodeling work over curing surfaces. Clean up spills promptly.

Pro Sheets need an environmentally controlled site. Deliver and install them after the building is fully enclosed and protected from exterior weather; poor storage can cause warping or curling. Store them in the environment where they’ll be used, wrapped in their original packaging until use.

Protect the stairs separately

Stair Armor provides heavy-duty stair protection, and 90-Day Edge Tape is intended to hold it in place. Treat the stairs as their own part of the protection job. Check that every covered step stays secure before traffic starts.

Installing a new wood floor

Put the right tape against the right surface

Ram Board rolls and Pro Sheets are non-staining. Tape deserves separate attention: Seam Tape’s aggressive adhesive can remove finishes and damage floors. Use it only on protection seams. For direct floor contact, follow the flooring manufacturer’s tape recommendation and test Edge Tape in a small, inconspicuous area.

Original Seam Tape blocks liquid, dust and debris at the joints, with a kraft-paper backing that tears for installation. For curing concrete or on-site-finished or recently cured hardwood, Ram Board recommends breathable seam tape such as Vapor-Cure Tape, which allows moisture and vapor to escape.

Match Edge Tape to the job schedule. The 14-Day Edge Tape uses a low-tack adhesive designed to release for up to 14 days. The 90-Day Edge Tape holds Ram Board and Stair Armor and is advertised for residue-free removal for up to 90 days. Apply Edge Tape to clean, dry surfaces and plan removal within its stated window.

If tape is already stuck to the floor, start at a small corner and ease it back slowly with the pull kept low. Stop if the finish starts lifting. For residue, follow the flooring’s care instructions and test any permitted cleaner in an inconspicuous spot first.

Room stripped for a remodel

Clean underneath before covering

Sweep or vacuum thoroughly before laying the protection. Grit trapped underneath can grind against the finish under foot traffic. Install rolled Ram Board with the logo facing up, and fold its Wall Guard score line where protection is needed along baseboards and lower walls.

The Ram Board Multi-Cutter is designed to cut surface protection directly on the finished surface using a dual edge-guard system. That feature matters when you’re trimming protection over a floor you’re trying to preserve.

Ram Board can often go to another job, depending on wear and the substances it contacts. Sweep before removal, inspect the material, and roll up usable board. Store it somewhere dry, cool and well ventilated.

Frequently Asked Questions

What tape should you use with Ram Board?

Use Seam Tape to join the protection at the seams, and keep it off the floor itself because its aggressive adhesive can lift finishes. For edges that need anchoring directly to the floor, follow the flooring manufacturer’s tape recommendation. Test Edge Tape on a small, inconspicuous area first, and apply it only to a clean, dry surface.

How do you remove Ram Board tape from a floor?

Start at a small corner and pull slowly, keeping the tape low against the floor instead of pulling straight up. Stop if the finish starts lifting. For adhesive residue, follow your flooring’s care instructions and test any permitted cleaner in a hidden spot first; seam tape’s aggressive adhesive makes removal without damage uncertain.

What does Ram Board floor protection protect against?

It provides temporary floor protection for construction, remodeling, moving and renovation projects, with fibers that help cushion impacts and resist water, paint and mud. It’s moisture-resistant, so clean up spills promptly instead of leaving them to sit. Sweep or vacuum before covering the floor, because trapped grit can scratch the finish as you walk over it.

Can you use Ram Board on stairs?

Stair Armor is the brand’s product for protecting stairs, and 90-Day Edge Tape is intended to hold it in place. Secure each covered step and check for loose edges before you let traffic onto the stairs. If the tape will touch the finished surface, test it in an inconspicuous area first.

Does Ram Board come in sheets?

Pro Sheets measure 48 by 96 inches and join at the seams, giving you separate panels to fit around the room. You can cut them to length with a utility knife, but protect the finished floor beneath the cut. Keep them wrapped until use and store them in the enclosed, environmentally controlled space where they’ll be installed; poor storage can leave them warped or curled.

When should you use Ram Board Vapor-Cure Tape?

Use breathable seam tape when you’re covering curing concrete or on-site-finished or recently cured hardwood. Vapor-Cure Tape lets moisture and vapor escape through the taped joints, so the seams don’t defeat the purpose of breathable protection. Keep it on the protection seams, off the finished floor.
