Valspar Medallion Plus paint is for homeowners and painters repainting interior walls, trim and ceilings or exterior siding. Interior resists stains, scuffs and scrubbing. Exterior has a flexible formula that resists cracking and peeling, so choose the line for the surface you’re painting.
Medallion is part of Valspar, the paint and coatings brand established in 1806. Valspar is owned by The Sherwin-Williams Company. Its range includes interior and exterior paints, stains, brushes and rollers.
Interior paint for the room you’re repainting
Medallion Plus Interior’s resistance to stains, scuffs and scrubbing is useful on hallway walls that get handled and cleaned. It suits properly prepared drywall, plaster, masonry, wood and primed metal.
Look at your color choice in the room’s daylight and under the lamps you actually use. Light changes how a color reads. Flat helps keep surface imperfections quiet; more sheen makes them easier to see. Interior comes in flat, eggshell, satin and semi-gloss. Settle the color and sheen together.
Plan the coat count before starting
Medallion Plus Interior advertises one-coat coverage, but deep or bright colors, surface conditions and application techniques can require multiple coats. Leave room in the job for another coat.
Medallion Plus Exterior recommends one or two coats and lists coverage of 250–400 square feet per gallon. Allow for the coat count when figuring the quantity, with room for the lower end of that coverage range on rough surfaces.
Give the paint a prepared surface
For Interior, remove wallpaper and loose, peeling paint, scrape and sand damaged paint, and sand glossy surfaces dull. Thoroughly clean the surface and let it dry before painting.
Exterior is intended for properly prepared wood, hardboard, aluminum siding, vinyl siding, masonry, brick, stucco, cement composition panels and metal. Remove contaminants with an appropriate cleaner, rinse thoroughly and let the surface dry. Remove peeled or damaged paint and sand glossy surfaces dull. Seal stains with an appropriate primer, and spot prime bare surfaces before caulking around windows, doors and other openings.
On the unpainted woods covered by Exterior’s instructions, the first coat may show staining; a second coat will even the appearance. If staining persists, spot prime severe areas with a stain-blocking primer.
Give exterior work enough weather time
Medallion Plus Exterior lists an application range of 40–90°F. Air, surface and paint temperatures must be above 40°F and at least 5°F above the dew point. Choose a window with no rain or snow expected within two hours and air and surface temperatures staying at or above 40°F for 48 hours. Large expanses of metal siding require air, surface and paint temperatures of at least 50°F.
Keep the application consistent
Stir either line thoroughly and intermix containers for uniformity. Use the paint as supplied. For Interior, paint the ceiling first, then walls and trim. Roll approximately a two-foot-by-two-foot area in an N pattern, then finish with light strokes in one direction.
Both lines clean up with warm, soapy water. Keep unused paint out of drains and follow local disposal and recycling guidance for Exterior leftovers.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Valspar Medallion Plus used for?
Valspar Medallion Plus includes separate interior and exterior paints, both with primer included. Use Interior for properly prepared interior walls, trim and ceilings, and Exterior for exterior work such as siding. Exterior isn’t for floors, so keep that distinction in mind when planning a porch repaint.
Does Valspar Medallion Plus cover in one coat?
Medallion Plus Interior advertises one-coat coverage, but deep or bright colors, surface conditions and application techniques can mean you’ll need multiple coats. Exterior recommends one or two coats. Allow time for another coat instead of counting on the first coat to finish the job.
Do you need primer with Valspar Medallion Plus?
The primer in Medallion Plus doesn’t eliminate every separate priming step. For exterior work, seal stains with an appropriate primer and spot prime bare surfaces before caulking around openings. If staining persists on unpainted wood after painting, spot prime severe areas with a stain-blocking primer.
How soon can it rain after painting with Valspar Medallion Plus Exterior?
Medallion Plus Exterior’s Rain Ready technology advertises protection from rain-related runs, blisters and water marks after two hours, so leave at least that much time before expected rain or snow. The listed application range is 40–90°F, with air, surface and paint temperatures above 40°F and at least 5°F above the dew point. Check the overnight forecast too: air and surface temperatures must stay at or above 40°F for 48 hours. For large expanses of metal siding, air, surface and paint temperatures must be at least 50°F when you apply it.
