Krylon spray paint is for DIYers, crafters, artists and professionals refreshing projects, adding decorative finishes or doing maintenance. Fusion All-In-One lets you paint listed surfaces, including plastic, without sanding or priming. That shortens the preparation job when the surface is properly prepared.
Krylon is a spray-paint and coatings brand founded in 1947 by Philadelphia businessman Howard E. Kester. Sherwin-Williams is its parent company. Its range includes general-purpose, rust-preventative, craft, specialty and brush-on products.
Choose the line for your material and finish
Fusion All-In-One lists plastic, wood, metal, glass, wicker and ceramic among its surfaces. For a plastic refresh, Fusion is the straightforward starting point. Follow the preparation instructions for the surface you’re painting.
COLORmaxx includes Paint + Primer, a separate primer, Metallic Paint and Acrylic Crystal Clear. Choose the product formulated for your material, then settle the sheen. Fusion offers matte; COLORmaxx Paint + Primer offers flat, satin, semi-gloss and gloss.
Both Fusion and COLORmaxx include metallic paint, and Fusion also includes hammered and textured products. Surface appearance matters as much as color when you’re matching an existing piece. Krylon cautions that screen and printed colors can differ from applied paint, so judge a dried sample in the light where the project will sit.
Classic uses a fast-drying lacquer formula for indoor or outdoor work and comes in gloss, metallic and satin finishes. Harmony is a water-based spray paint designed for indoor use in a well-ventilated area.
Give the paint a firm surface
Fusion’s no-sanding, no-priming application saves work on its listed surfaces. Preparation still matters. Loose paint underneath leaves the new coating attached to something that’s already coming away. Krylon’s preparation instructions call for removing loose paint and rust with a wire brush or sandpaper, wiping away debris and allowing the surface to dry completely.
Fusion All-In-One’s No-Peel Guarantee addresses peeling or failure to perform to the customer’s satisfaction, with application according to product instructions on a properly prepared surface.
Plan drying and handling separately
For Fusion and COLORmaxx, plan your schedule around the drying instructions on the exact can, as Krylon directs. Dry to touch and ready to handle are different stages; picking up a piece puts pressure on the finish. Give it handling time. Cooler conditions lengthen drying and curing, so allow extra time before moving the project.
Build coverage with thin coats
Trying to cover everything with one heavy coat invites runs. Krylon recommends several thin coats at the spraying distance specified on the can. Start and finish each pass off the object, keep the movement smooth and overlap passes by approximately one-third.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does Krylon spray paint take to dry?
Krylon spray paint drying times vary by formula. Tough Coat lists 15 minutes to touch, while industrial Rust Tough lists 25 minutes to touch and one hour to handle. For Fusion or COLORmaxx, use the times on your can; a surface that feels dry isn’t necessarily ready to pick up.
Is Krylon spray paint oil-based?
Krylon spray paint comes in several formulas, so it isn’t all oil-based. Harmony is water-based, Classic is lacquer-based, and Tough Coat is an acrylic alkyd enamel. If you’re painting over an existing finish, check compatibility before coating the whole piece.
Do I need primer before using Krylon Fusion on plastic?
Krylon Fusion All-In-One can go on plastic without sanding or priming when you follow its surface preparation instructions. You still need a clean, dry surface with no loose coating underneath. Skipping primer saves a step; skipping cleanup leaves dirt between the paint and the plastic.
Does Krylon make matte spray paint?
Krylon offers matte finishes in both Fusion All-In-One and Harmony. Harmony is water-based and intended for indoor use in a well-ventilated area. Matte keeps reflected light down, but you’ll still see rough edges and poor surface preparation.
