Klean Strip Solvents, Removers and Paint Prep Klean Strip

Klean Strip solvents, removers and paint-prep products help homeowners and contractors thin paint, remove old coatings and prepare surfaces for another finish. Choose by what needs to happen on the job: thinning, stripping or preparing the existing paint for another coat.

Klean Strip is a home-improvement brand in the Barr Brands portfolio. Its range includes solvents, thinners, removers, cleaners, surface-preparation products and fuels. It serves professionals and do-it-yourselfers.

Linseed oil needs to soak into the wood

Klean Strip Boiled Linseed Oil can be used on outdoor wooden furniture, and it must penetrate the wood to dry completely. Start with dry, absorbent wood. Wet wood prevents penetration, and recently purchased pressure-treated lumber may take several months to dry.

Most fully dried wiping stains that only change the wood’s color still allow the oil to soak in. For previously stained wood, use it over a wiping stain that leaves the wood absorbent.

Excess oil causes gummy residue or a blotchy finish. A heavier coat creates trouble here. Let the oil soak for 10 minutes, then wipe off the surface film with a dry, lint-free cloth.

Plan for both surface drying and curing. Allow up to 16 hours for the oil to become tack-free or dry to the touch, and several days for full drying.

Handle oil rags immediately

Klean Strip Boiled Linseed Oil generates heat while drying, which can cause contacted materials to ignite spontaneously. Immediately handwash used rags outdoors in a bucket with water and detergent, then rinse, repeating until all oil is removed. Spread the rinsed materials outdoors to their full size in an airy spot for at least 24 hours above 40°F, until completely dry.

Match paint prep to the old finish

Decide whether the old coating needs to come off or stay for another coat. Klean Strip Premium Stripper removes paint, epoxy and polyurethane from wood, metal and masonry; keep its use to small projects such as furniture because using it on floors or large areas dramatically increases fire and health risks. For repainting an existing painted surface, Klean Strip Liquid Sandpaper degreases and deglosses it and creates temporary tack to help the new finish bond.

Klean Strip’s paint-work range also includes acetone, caulk remover and Easy Liquid Sander Deglosser.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you use Klean Strip paint remover?

With Klean Strip Premium Stripper, wear chemical splash goggles and chemical-resistant gloves; a dust mask won’t protect you from vapors. Work at 65–85°F, away from strong breezes and hot sun, and protect surrounding areas with a heavy plastic drop cloth. Apply a thick coat to a small, 3-by-3-foot area, then scrape after 15 minutes with a plastic scraper or brush. Don’t use it on floors or large surface areas, where fire and health risks increase dramatically.

How do you use Klean Strip liquid sandpaper?

Apply Klean Strip Liquid Sandpaper with a coarse, lint-free cloth to degrease and degloss painted surfaces, including latex paint. It micro-etches the surface and leaves a slight residue you can paint over. Keep it off cabinet hardware, and wipe any accidental contact off with a damp rag before it can damage the hardware. It’s intended for painted surfaces, not stained ones.

How do you use Klean Strip odorless mineral spirits?

For cleanup after stripping, dip a clean abrasive pad in Klean Strip Odorless Mineral Spirits and use it to loosen remaining finish and remove residue. You’re ready to refinish only when the surface is completely clean and dry.

What is Klean Strip boiled linseed oil used for?

You can use Klean Strip Boiled Linseed Oil on outdoor wooden furniture, where it needs to penetrate the wood to dry completely. Most fully dried wiping stains still allow that penetration, but wood finish stains leave a protective coating that blocks it. Once the treated wood has dried, you can use it around flowers and vegetables.
