J-B Weld Epoxy and Repair Putty J-B Weld

J-B Weld epoxy and putty are for bonding parts, filling gaps, and repairing metal, plastic, or wood around the house or shop. You can match the adhesive to your material and choose between a paste for gaps and cracks or a hand-mixed putty for rebuilding metal.

The J-B Weld Company makes epoxies and adhesives for metal, wood, plastic, and general-purpose repairs. Sam and Mary Bonham founded it in 1969 in Sulphur Springs, Texas. The employee-owned company is headquartered in Marietta, Georgia, and maintains a presence in Sulphur Springs.

Choose around the repair and the cure

Original J-B Weld sets in 4–6 hours and cures in 16–24 hours. KwikWeld sets in six minutes and cures in 4–6 hours. Have the pieces fitted and the supports ready before mixing, especially with KwikWeld. Six minutes goes fast when you’re still lining up a joint.

Putting a repair under load as soon as it feels firm can spoil the work. Give KwikWeld its full 4–6-hour cure before loading the joint. Temperature and humidity can affect set and cure times.

MinuteWeld is intended for a clear, fast-setting bond, with a one-minute set and a one-hour cure. It’s suited to a job you’ve already fitted and prepared. ClearWeld provides a clear bond with a five-minute set and a one-hour cure.

Use putty for rebuilding metal

SteelStik is a hand-mixable, steel-reinforced epoxy putty for repairing or rebuilding metal, including metal pipes and surfaces. Its putty form suits a damaged area you need to rebuild by hand. It sets in five minutes and cures dark grey.

J-B Weld’s twin-tube products have a paste-like consistency suited to filling gaps and cracks. A thin hole patch needs support and enough sound material around the opening for the adhesive to grip. Provide backing across the opening before applying the patch.

Match wood and plastic repairs to the material

WoodWeld is the non-foaming adhesive for bonding and repairing interior or exterior wood, so choose it when you’re joining wood pieces. KwikWood Putty Stick is intended for insect damage, rot, and furniture or molding repairs, making it the putty choice for a missing chunk in molding.

PlasticWeld is intended for quick-setting bonds on rigid plastics. Identify the plastic and fit the broken pieces together before mixing; a broad mating surface gives the adhesive more area to hold.

Prepare the surface before mixing

Remove loose material and contamination, then roughen the bonding surfaces with light sandpaper or abrasive cloth. Have the surfaces completely dry before application.

Separate tubes use equal parts resin and hardener, while syringes dispense at a 1:1 ratio. Mix the separate components thoroughly. With a putty stick, mix the inner and outer layers together using gloved hands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does J-B Weld work on wood?

Yes. WoodWeld is a non-foaming adhesive for bonding and repairing interior or exterior wood; it sets in 15 minutes and cures in 30 minutes. If you’re repairing insect damage, rot, or damaged furniture or molding, KwikWood is the putty option.

How do you use J-B Weld epoxy?

For J-B Weld two-part epoxy in separate tubes, dispense equal parts resin and hardener and mix thoroughly before applying. Roughen the bonding surfaces with light sandpaper or abrasive cloth, and make sure they’re completely dry. Fit the parts and arrange your supports before mixing so you’re ready to assemble the repair.

How do you use J-B Weld ClearWeld?

The ClearWeld syringe dispenses the two components at a 1:1 ratio; mix them thoroughly before applying to your prepared, dry surfaces. Have the pieces lined up beforehand because it sets in five minutes and cures in one hour. A five-minute set doesn’t mean the repair is fully cured.

How do you use J-B Weld putty?

Mix the putty stick’s inner and outer layers together with gloved hands before applying. If you’re using SteelStik for a metal repair, have the area prepared first because the steel-reinforced putty sets in five minutes. For WaterWeld, knead until the color is uniform; it has a 15–25-minute set time and sets hard in one hour.
