Eaton Circuit Breakers Eaton

Eaton breakers protect your home’s circuits when you’re replacing a breaker or planning a panel project. BR serves BR equipment, while CH gives you a space-saving ¾-inch design with AFCI and GFCI options. Your panel determines the breaker line you need.

Eaton is a power management company. Its beginnings date to Joseph Eaton in 1911. Its products and services help customers manage electrical, hydraulic and mechanical power.

BR, CH and Cutler-Hammer

Cutler-Hammer is an Eaton series. BR and CH are separate breaker lines within the choice you’re making. Match the replacement’s line and ratings to the panel label and the compatibility documentation for the exact breaker and panel.

BR breakers serve indoor and outdoor BR loadcenters, spa panels, meter breakers and subpanels. Eaton’s short-body BR electronic breaker leaves room for wiring inside the loadcenter. That design is useful when conductors crowd the wiring channel.

CH’s compact width helps with panel-space planning, and the line includes AFCI and GFCI options. The panel’s permitted breaker layout controls what can go in each position.

Eaton’s classified breakers are UL tested and listed for installation in over 750 loadcenters, with suitability for your replacement determined by the documented pairing of the particular breaker and panel.

Protection for the circuit

Eaton AFCIs detect arcs behind walls and shut off power to reduce fire risk. Eaton presents GFCIs for safety where electricity may come into contact with water. Select the protection required for the circuit along with the compatible breaker line.

Eaton has revised its arc-fault technology to reduce unwanted trips caused by interference from devices or appliances. Repeat trips deserve diagnosis. Have the circuit and connected equipment checked before treating a recurring trip as interference.

Branch breakers protect wires leading to individual loads such as lights and outlets. Eaton main breakers serve as main disconnects in single-family homes or tenant main breakers in metering stacks.

The broader Eaton range also includes wiring devices, wallplates and automotive electrical items.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Eaton breakers compatible with Challenger panels?

An Eaton breaker isn’t automatically compatible with a Challenger panel. You need compatibility documentation that names your exact panel and the replacement breaker. A breaker fitting into the slot isn’t proof that it’s suitable.

Are Eaton and Cutler-Hammer breakers the same?

Cutler-Hammer is an Eaton series, so the names are related. That doesn’t make every breaker carrying either name interchangeable. Your panel’s labeling and the replacement breaker’s compatibility documentation determine the match.

How do you wire an Eaton GFCI outlet?

An Eaton GFCI outlet needs to be wired and installed according to the instructions for that particular device. Instructions for a GFCI breaker aren’t a substitute. If you can’t identify the existing wiring and how it serves the circuit, have an electrician handle the installation.

Are Eaton outlets good?

With an Eaton outlet, judge the particular device by how it suits your circuit and holds a plug. A firm plug grip matters in everyday use; a receptacle that lets plugs sag or slip out needs attention. Breaker features aren’t a basis for judging outlet quality.
