Command Hooks and Picture Hanging Strips Command

Command hooks and picture hanging strips let you hang frames, put up temporary decorations and organize household items without nails or tools. They’re for people arranging rooms who want adhesive hangers designed to remove cleanly. Choose by what you’re hanging, where it’s going and what it weighs.

Command is 3M’s brand of adhesive hanging and organizing products. 3M launched the first Command products in 1996. The range includes hooks, hanging strips and clips for household organization and décor.

Match the hanger to the item

Use picture hanging strips for frames and wall collages. Hooks suit items that hang from a loop or handle, while poster strips handle posters and decorating clips hold cords or string lights. Look at the back of your item before choosing the hanger.

Weigh the whole frame, including its glass and backing. Command weight limits vary by product and strip size, so choose a package rated for the complete item. Stick to the stated capacity and use the number of strips specified in the instructions.

Painted walls need sound paint and smooth contact

Command hooks and picture hanging strips work on painted walls when the paint is fully cured for at least seven days and the surface is clean, smooth and in good condition. Check the paint can’s cure time as well, and allow the full curing period before installing the strips.

Smooth contact matters. Heavy texture can keep the adhesive from touching enough of the wall to hold properly. Choose a smooth surface listed on the hanger’s package, such as sound painted walls, finished wood, tile, glass or metal.

Give the adhesive time to hold

Clean the attachment spot with rubbing alcohol. Dust, grease and cleaner residue weaken the bond, and many household sprays leave a film where the adhesive needs contact. Wait until the cleaned spot is completely dry, then press the strip firmly for the time specified on its package.

Rushing the waiting period is an easy installation mistake. Many Command products need at least one hour before loading so the adhesive can develop its hold. Follow your package’s installation sequence and leave the item down for the full specified time.

Match the strips to the location

Choose Command Bath products for hot, wet and humid bathroom conditions. Their water-resistant strips are designed for that environment. For a shower installation, use a product whose package specifically allows that location and surface.

For outdoor conditions, choose Command Outdoor products with weather-resistant strips and use the surfaces allowed on their packaging.

Pull the tab down slowly

Clean removal depends on how you apply and remove the strips. For a two-piece hook, lift off the cover to expose the adhesive tab. Gently steady the base and pull the tab slowly straight down, keeping the pull along the wall.

If a tab breaks, follow the package’s broken-tab directions. Dental floss or string can saw through a remaining strip, and a hair dryer can soften the adhesive at the base plate before using floss.

Many Command hooks can be reused with the correct replacement strips. Moving a hook calls for a fresh strip. Match its size and adhesive type to the hook’s instructions, including the specified Bath or Outdoor replacement where required.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you use Command strips?

Start with a clean, dry, smooth surface listed on the package. Clean it with rubbing alcohol, let it dry, then follow the package’s placement and pressing instructions. Many products need at least one hour before you add weight. If you’re using Command hooks, follow the hook’s installation sequence and keep the removal tab accessible.

How do you hang pictures with Command strips?

Use Command picture hanging strips rated for the whole frame, including its glass and backing. Follow the package’s strip count and placement instructions. Extra strips don’t automatically give you extra capacity, so a heavier frame needs a product rated for that weight.

Can you use Command hooks for a curtain rod?

Yes, Command makes Curtain Rod Hooks for that job. Check the specific package’s weight limit and instructions against everything you’re hanging; a rating on another hook doesn’t apply.

What are Command strips?

Command strips are adhesive strips used with hooks and other hanging products to hold items without nails. The adhesive releases when you slowly stretch the removal tab along the wall. Standard strips are single-use, but many hooks can be rehung with the correct fresh replacement strip.
