CityPost cable railing is for homeowners building their own deck, patio, or loft railing. The system is designed to spare you post cutting, with connecting pieces for straight runs, corners, and deck-to-stair transitions.
CityPost supplies DIY cable railing systems, posts, top rails, and connecting sleeves. Three friends developed CityPost. The company’s origin story starts with a frustrating search for cable railing during a home renovation.
Lay out the posts around the framing
Draw the whole railing, including the stairs, and mark every corner and change in direction. CityPost uses different connecting pieces for those joints. The footage is only part of the parts list.
You can choose base mounting from the top or fascia mounting around the front with either post height. The mounting position needs framing that can hold the railing fasteners. Settle that choice while the framing is still accessible.
CityPost offers 36-inch and 42-inch posts, designed for placement on 6-foot centers to support the top rail. Lay out the ends, corners, and stair opening before dividing up the straight runs.
Connect the deck and stairs
CityPost offers horizontal and stair railing, including solutions for mounting on top of stair stringers. Its upper transition sleeve joins two CityPost kits in a straight line from an upper deck to descending stairs. Yes, the deck and stairs can connect. That sleeve fits a layout where the deck run continues straight into the stairs.
Corners use different pieces. CityPost’s corner transitions join top rails and conceal cuts, with sleeves for angled and right-angle connections. A right-angle horizontal-to-stair transition sleeve is also available. Mark the direction of each turn on your drawing so each connection has the right piece.
Along a straight run, the straight sleeve fits over the handrail to join two railing segments. It attaches with four included screws.
Plan for cable cutting, crimping, and drilling
You’ll need a stainless steel cable cutter and a hand swaging tool, which crimps the end fittings onto the cable. You’ll also need a hand drill and the bits specified for your post type in the installation instructions. This suits a DIY installer prepared to do all three jobs.
The mistake to avoid is cutting cable before the posts and cable path are settled. CityPost provides 10% additional cable for installation adjustments. Establish the route and measure it before making the cuts.
Sizes, materials, and connecting pieces
The posts are zinc-plated steel with a powder-coated finish, and CityPost’s top rail is powder-coated aluminum. Account for the top rail separately on the parts list so its lengths and connections are clear.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is CityPost cable railing a DIY project?
Yes, CityPost is designed for home DIY installation, and the system avoids cutting posts. You still need to be comfortable drilling, cutting stainless steel cable, and crimping cable fittings with a hand swaging tool.
Does CityPost come with the top rail?
Check the contents of your particular kit before counting the top rail as included. CityPost offers a 1-by-3-inch powder-coated aluminum top rail, but kit contents need to be confirmed for your order.
Can CityPost railing connect a deck to stairs?
Yes. CityPost has connecting sleeves for a deck run that continues straight into descending stairs and for a right-angle deck-to-stair turn. The direction of that connection determines which sleeve your layout needs.
Can I get the cable cut ahead of time?
Yes, CityPost can supply pre-cut cable on request. Your post locations and cable path need to be settled first so the lengths match the finished layout.
Can I choose a custom railing color?
Yes, CityPost offers custom post colors. Black, White, Gray, and Bronze are the standard color choices, so a custom color gives you another option when those don’t suit the project.
