Capture log stain is for DIYers and contractors finishing logs and timbers who want the wood grain to show. Its translucent pigments add color, while the finish moves with the wood and helps protect against moisture infiltration and UV damage. It’s a fit when the wood itself is part of the finished appearance.
Capture belongs to Sashco’s range of stains, caulks, and sealants. The Colorado company has been in business since 1936. It’s family owned and makes products for DIYers and contractors.
Choosing Red Cedar on your wood
Red Cedar is a Capture color offered in a one-gallon size. With a translucent stain, the wood underneath contributes to the finished color. A sample beside your trim tells you more than the color name.
Actual Capture colors can differ from their digital representations. Sashco offers Capture samples and a color card made with actual product, so you’ve got physical references for the decision. The sample on your wood is the deciding test. Compare it in the light where the finished wood will be seen, on a piece prepared the same way as the project.
Capture’s 11-color range also includes Autumn Aspen and Weathered Wood.
Planning the finish
Capture can be used inside and outside on logs and timbers, including timber-frame homes. Its applications also include wood siding, wood trim, and log and wood handrails. For exterior work, Cascade Exterior Clear Coat must be applied over Capture, so that step belongs in the project plan from the start.
Mixing and brush work
Thorough mixing belongs at the start of the job and throughout application. Use a drill-driven mixer before and during application, and combine containers of the same stain from different lot numbers.
A good-quality brush with split ends helps pick up stain. Allow time for repeated brush work: applying the same amount of Capture by brush may take three or four coats.
Capture offers water cleanup. Clean tools promptly while the stain is still wet.
Maintenance on a log wall
Capture can stay in place during maintenance. That matters on a log wall, where stripping around every contour adds work. During routine inspections, pay particular attention to exposed faces and places where water repeatedly wets the wood.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Capture log stain need a clear coat?
Yes. For exterior work, Capture log stain requires Cascade Exterior Clear Coat over it. That clear-coat step belongs in your time and material estimate from the start.
What colors does Capture stain come in?
Capture has an 11-color range that includes Red Cedar, Autumn Aspen, and Weathered Wood. Smoked Hickory and Gunstock Brown are exclusive to the Flex Tint job-site stain system. Your wood contributes to the finished color, so a sample on the actual wood tells you more than a screen image.
Can you use Capture on siding?
Yes. Capture can be used on wood siding as well as logs and timbers, with translucent pigments that leave the grain visible. You can also use it on fiber-cement siding where you want a stained woodgrain appearance.
Do you have to strip Capture off for maintenance?
No. Capture doesn’t need to be removed for maintenance. That saves stripping work around log contours, but it doesn’t mean your finish can go without attention. Exposed faces and areas that stay wet deserve a close look during routine inspections.
