Starborn Cap-Tor xd Deck Screws Cap-Tor xd

Cap-Tor xd deck screws are for builders and homeowners fastening composite and PVC decking and cladding. You get colors intended to match the boards, which matters when the screw heads stay visible. The family includes options for treated lumber, metal framing and a collated driving setup.

Starborn Industries makes Cap-Tor xd. It’s an independent, second-generation family-owned and operated business based in Edison, New Jersey. Kurt and Florence Gertner founded the company in Brooklyn in 1961. Fasteners became its primary business in the early 1980s.

Match the line to the framing

Cap-Tor xd serves both pressure-treated lumber and metal framing. The Epoxy/Stainless line is intended for exterior use and approved for ACQ and pressure-treated lumber. Cap-Tor xd Metal screws fasten composite or PVC decking and cladding to metal framing. The framing determines which line you need.

Within Epoxy/Stainless, you’ve got epoxy coating, Grade 305 stainless steel and Marine Grade 316 stainless steel. Settle the corrosion exposure before choosing the color. For saltwater exposure or other locations where corrosion is a concern, use Marine Grade 316 stainless steel.

Collated screws for an auto-feed setup

Cap-Tor xd Collated comes in strips for a Muro Auto Feed Driving Tool. It suits a job where you’re set up to feed screws from strips instead of handling each loose screw. Choose the collated format around that Muro driving setup.

A head designed for capped boards

The undercut head is designed to cut through the hard outer layer of capstock decking. Reverse threads are designed to prevent mushrooming and surface defects around the head. Those details matter on a finished surface where every screw location shows.

The tri-lobular shank and thread are designed to reduce driving torque, while the Type 17 auger tip aids insertion and helps prevent splitting. The extra-deep star-drive recess is intended to prevent cam-out, where the bit climbs out of the screw head. Keep the bit seated squarely while you drive.

Control the finish at each screw

With Epoxy/Stainless, stop flush with the decking surface. Burying the head is the mistake to avoid. Ease off as the head reaches the board face so you can control the finish.

The Epoxy/Stainless installation instructions call for two screws per joist. Predrilling is recommended within one inch of a deck-board end; drill those holes before fastening the ends.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Cap-Tor screws used for?

Cap-Tor screws fasten composite and PVC decking and cladding. Match the screw line to your framing: Epoxy/Stainless is approved for ACQ and pressure-treated lumber, while the Metal line is intended for metal framing.

Are Cap-Tor screws the same as Headcote?

No. Cap-Tor and Headcote are separate Starborn product families, so a Headcote specification isn’t a specification for these screws. If you’re looking for Grade 305 stainless steel, that’s an option in the Epoxy/Stainless line.
